A friend of mine and many of her neighbors are trapped in their homes after the recent huge blizzard.

She would like people to contact Gov. Newsom and San Bernardino, CA, officials and tell them to send help. For those of us not in California, the request is to ask Pres. Biden to declare San Bernardino a disaster area.

This is a natural disaster, compounded by human mismanagement. The city sent out snowplows, creating huge ice berms that are trapping people in their homes.

My friend posted about this to her journal, and is asking everyone to please pass it on.

I just used the whitehouse.gov contact form to write to the president/FEMA about this.

NDAs play a huge role in enforcing silence around discrimination and harassment and are particularly beloved of tech and entertainment companies. Pinterest, for example, famously bound many of its BIPOC employees with NDAs that prevented them from speaking out about pervasive racist harassment at the company, and NDAs also restricted many women in the entertainment industry from speaking out on MeToo matters. NDAs act as, essentially, a loophole in federal whistleblower law, threatening people who want to speak up about poor treatment at the hands of past employers with loss of pay and possible legal action. Read more about NDAs at the Guardian here.

In 2018, California passed SB 820, which specifically bans NDAs in cases of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sex discrimination. SB 331, or the Silenced No More Act, seeks to complement this bill by banning NDAs in all cases of workplace harassment and discrimination, including along axes of race, disability, age, and religion. SB 331 has passed the State Senate and now faces the Assembly.

If you're in California, please contact your Assemblymember (find out who they are here) and tell them to support the Silenced No More Act. Find a script below for calling, writing, or emailing.

You can also send a ResistBot message by texting PKLNMK to 50409.

Hi everyone,

The strike is still on. There's a rally and march from city hall to LAUSD headquarters Tuesday.

There will be a sympathy strike from some of the other unions to show support for teachers. Check here for the list of participating schools.

Things to do:
  1. Some of the teachers have gotten ill from marching so much in the rain. Emergen-C packets, hot tea, etc is appreciated.
  2. Contact the board and demand a fair contract for the teachers.
  3. Contact the other members of our government - Newsom, Harris, Feinstein, etc and tell them you want a fair contract. Feinstein, as far as I know, has said nothing about the strike.
  4. Support the teachers by helping them picket at their schools. Tuesdays are short days for a lot of schools so they may not make it back in time for the after-school picketing.
  5. Support anyone who needs childcare, if you're able.
  6. Reiterate to concerned parents that schools cannot retaliate against students for participating in the strike.
Oakland teachers are gearing up to strike.
Denver teachers might go on strike, too.

The shutdown continues. Please keep contacting your representatives. If they're Democrats, thank them for standing firm against the blackmail from the White House. If they're Republicans, urge them to join colleagues like Thom Tills, Cory Gardner and Susan Collins (all up for re-election in 2020) who seem willing to find a way to end the shutdown.

Among the many other ongoing issues, there are teachers' strikes in LA and other places (some unofficially) and we have actions to support those workers. (Thanks [personal profile] toastykitten!) And fannishly, [community profile] fandomtrumpshate creator sign ups are open until 1 Feb.

But there has been some good news coming from a new (state) legislature! [personal profile] redbird let is know that the NY Legislature has passed electoral law reforms.

New actions since last check-in

Action: Call Your Senators About No New Business Till They Open The Government
Crowdpac To Fund Mitch Mcconnell's 2020 Opponent
LAUSD UTLA Strike

Protecting the Mueller investigation
Encourage your senators to follow Flake's lead
