It's been an eventful week, with the release of transcripts of witness testimony from the impeachment hearings, ground rules being laid for the public hearings starting next week and some pleasing election results. Also not a good week in court for the Trump family, with Trump fined for misusing his charitable foundation and being ordered to turn over his tax returns to a grand jury.

It's been quiet in the comm, but do let us know in comments what you've been up to. It's always good to hear from you!

This week saw the launch of a formal impeachement inquiry into Trump, following revelations about the phone call with the president of Ukraine. And it turns out there isn't just one whistleblower but two, with other one alleging possible interference with the IRS audit of Trump's tax returns.

We've only had one new post in the comm, but plenty of ongoing actions -- those relating to immigration have new impetus from the news that the administration is drastically cutting the number of refugees allowed to enter the country.

And please do continue to tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are involved in and a chance for you to inspire others to join in.

This week saw another Democratic primary debate, while an Appeals Court reinstated an emoluments case against Trump, people were kicked off a ferry from the Bahamas to Florida over confusion between the ferry company and CBP about documentation and the administration is planning on screwing up the Amazon even further (to add to screwing up the Arctic). So a typical week, these days....

How is it September already? I hope you're all having a good Labor Day weekend and that anyone in the path of Hurricane Dorian stays safe.

We've had a few new actions in the past couple of weeks that are listed below. And with another mass shooting in Texas yesterday, our ongoing actions relating to gun control are still sadly relevant. As, of course, are our our actions relating to migrants and refugees, with reports of further ways people are being targeted and mistreated.

It's been quiet in the comm for the past couple of weeks, so no new posts to link. But in light of the shootings in El Paso, TX yesterday, overnight in Dayton, OH and a week ago in Gilroy, CA, I thought I'd focus on actions around gun control and link a tweet from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
If you’re just as sick of gun violence as an American reality, it’s time to get organizing.

There are more good resources in the comments but, of course, also quite a few assholes and trolls, so you may not want to read any further. If I have time, I'll come back later and list some of them in a comment here. Or if someone else wants to do that, feel free -- and, of course, please make your own suggestions.

Please also tell us in the comments what you've been doing! It's great to hear about all the amazing things our members are doing and a chance for you to inspire others to get involved. And I've kept the list of actions relating to immigrants and refugees, as it's not as if that crisis is over….

It's been a rough week. The election is coming up and early voting has started in many states. This is the time to do your ballot research for the down-ballot races. Ballotepedia can help, and also local papers (if you still have them and they are trustworthy) can at least shed light on propositions and things like that. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Upcoming Elections - New
GiveSmart Women (slate number 4!)
Voto Latino partners with Lyft to enable Dodge City voters to get to the polls
Excellent thread on effective voter contact
Maximize your donating efficiency with SCIENCE! (yes, it's another slate)

Other Actions - New
Scripts protesting HHS memo erasing transgender people
"Hell No To The Memo: 7 Action Items To Protect Trans and GNC People"
Tree of Life synagogue and HIAS refugee resettlement donation pages

(Upcoming Elections - Ongoing) )

Voter Registration, Voting Rights and How to Vote )

If you're looking for actions not related to the elections, take a look at past check-in posts where we have suggestions specifically for immigration (and also here) and for other issues

Yesterday was the March for Our Lives on gun control led by the Parkland shooting survivors who are a great inspiration to me right now. I was unable to go due to a family commitment, but if you did go, [personal profile] rachelmanija  has a post about her experience where you can share yours. In all the coverage, I found this article from Vox about closing the passion gap between who politicians hear from on gun issues one of the most illuminating. The bottom line: on guns the voters they hear from are anti-restriction gun owners. They are not punished at the voting booth for "thoughts and prayers." If you regularly call your state and federal representatives, or even if you just want to contact them about gun control now, consider adding gun control to the list of topics.

In the comm, we've been carrying on with [personal profile] elucidate_this's great idea for Giving up on Giving Up for Lent. Thanks to [personal profile] nanila for making this week's Check in Post #3, and to the members who've inspired us by sharing what they're doing. Lent ends in 1 week. If there is an action that you've been meaning to do, consider trying to do it this week.

Reminder that we now have a Friending Meme and a (locked) post where you can connect with others with live in the same area. We hope you find both of these posts useful!

We also have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tanaqui  and I are very grateful for the help.

So, what have you all been up to in the last week or are planning to get involved in next week?

It's been another chaotic and ridiculous week in the White House. (Warning: link goes to CNN with an autoplay video, but it's a good summary of all the madness that's been going on.)

It's been much quieter in the comm, but we've been following up on [personal profile] elucidate_this's great idea for Giving up on Giving Up for Lent. [personal profile] nanila made a Check In Post where members have shared some of the good things they've been doing. Feel free to tell us in comments -- there or here -- about anything else you've been doing to Give Up on Giving Up.

This week the survivors of the Florida High School shooting have kept the gun debate in the news. I'm so proud of these kids and there's lots of ways to support them and the gun control movement.

Also, [personal profile] elucidate_this has given up on giving up for Lent. Everyday she's going to do something toward not giving up. Lent ends on March 31st, so if you'd like to participate give a holler at the post. If you like the idea but can't commit to every day, consider pledging to do something a couple times a week or for X number of days. I'll add a mid-week check-in for that for additional encouragement, and if folks like the model, we can perhaps do monthly action challenge.
