Policing is super local, so asking for reform and defunding needs to happen at all levels.

You can find letter templates for your city or county here address to councils and mayors, and if it's not on the list, please consider submitting one. It's on github, and to submit you need an account, but a friend with a github account (mostlyinane on twitter) is willing to put them in for folks so put your letter in comments or pm me and I'll get it to her.

[personal profile] chestnut_pod posted in the check-in post about this compilation of
the most comprehensive listing of fundraisers, petitions, scripts, and action opportunities I've come across so far.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-0KC83vYfVQ-2freQveH43PWxuab2uWDEGolzrNoIks/mobilebasic#h.1n8cbq1bfcom

I thought it was worth pulling out as a post on its own to make sure everyone would see it.

A thread about the research:
For those who are interested in research-based solutions to stop police violence, here’s what you need to know - based on the facts and data. A thread.
https://twitter.com/samswey/status/1180655701271732224

A thread about legislation
*Activists and Legislators:* Here’s a thread of MEANINGFUL legislation that has been proposed and, in some cases, passed in cities and states to address police violence. Consider passing legislation like this in your community, too.

Also, [community profile] fandomtrumpshate has a post on Black Lives Matter: Resources for Supporting the Protests, covering donating, how to protest safely, non-monetary support and good sources of information.

(Again, thanks to FFA for the two Twitter threads.)

This was linked in the personal post at FFA (thanks to whoever posted it there!) and is a fantastic list of small and large actions you can take to improve racial justice.

George Floyd's brother has set up the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund on Go Fund Me. (This was linked in a news story on the website of the local CBS affiliate.)
This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George. A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund.

Also, as protests spread, an increasing number of protesters are being arrested. The National Bail Fund Network uses donations to help free people from pre-trial detention.
The National Bail Fund Network is made up of over sixty community bail and bond funds across the country. We regularly update this listing of community bail funds that are freeing people by paying bail/bond and are also fighting to abolish the money bail system and pretrial detention.

They have a specific COVID-19 rapid response fund, as well as listing general bail funds that mostly work on a state level.

Yesterday was the March for Our Lives on gun control led by the Parkland shooting survivors who are a great inspiration to me right now. I was unable to go due to a family commitment, but if you did go, [personal profile] rachelmanija  has a post about her experience where you can share yours. In all the coverage, I found this article from Vox about closing the passion gap between who politicians hear from on gun issues one of the most illuminating. The bottom line: on guns the voters they hear from are anti-restriction gun owners. They are not punished at the voting booth for "thoughts and prayers." If you regularly call your state and federal representatives, or even if you just want to contact them about gun control now, consider adding gun control to the list of topics.

In the comm, we've been carrying on with [personal profile] elucidate_this's great idea for Giving up on Giving Up for Lent. Thanks to [personal profile] nanila for making this week's Check in Post #3, and to the members who've inspired us by sharing what they're doing. Lent ends in 1 week. If there is an action that you've been meaning to do, consider trying to do it this week.

New Actions

Planning Ahead in Case of Mueller Firing
HHS is accepting Comments on New Rule Protecting the Right of Health Workers to Discriminate for Religions Reasons
Information and Organizing to End Police Violence
Information on State Primary Dates and list of pro-NRA Republicans who are vulnerable
Support progressive Congressional candidates in competitive rural districts

Ongoing Actions

Make a difference in the 2018 Midterms - organization organizing for all levels of elections
Boycott the NRA - contact streaming media companies to ask them to drop NRATV
District funds for the mid-terms

Housekeeping (the usual stuff)
Reminder that we now have a Friending Meme and a (locked) post where you can connect with others with live in the same area. We hope you find both of these posts useful!

We also have a suggestion post if there’s a topic that you’d like to see discussed but would like to ask the mods to look into. This can be anything from general information, or a how-to-do-a-thing, or something you may want to discuss as a community. Folks are welcome to post directly to the comm as always, but if you’re not comfortable/don’t have spoons, we can help too.

As we don't always get the time to pull things out of the suggestions post into their own separate posts, it may be worth checking every week (or tracking the post) to see if there's any new information you're interested in.

Also if you need help with tags, PM [personal profile] redbird, who is our tag guru. Both [personal profile] tanaqui  and I are very grateful for the help.

So, what have you all been up to in the last week or are planning to get involved in next week?
