I copied most of this from [personal profile] siderea's journal, there's a lot more detail in her post:

AMERICANS WITH DEMOCRAT SENATORS,

tl;dr: call them TODAY, tell them you absolutely expect them to shut down the government by voting against the continuing resolution bill if the GOP doesn't provide massive concessions, and maybe even then.

And whatever position they take, take it to social media immediately and make sure everyone you can reach knows it. Especially if they agree. [I think this assumes you talk to a staffer rather than leaving voivemail.]

There's a script about the CR at 5calls.org, but it says to tell your senator to ask for concessions in the CR, and it doesn't look like any such concessions would be worth much.

Slightly longer explanation:

The GOP has enough votes to pass the CR bill in the House, but will need at least seven Democrats to vote for it for it to pass.

The CR bill is not hugely bad, in and of itself. But if it doesn't pass, the government shuts down.

Shut it down.

The prevaling sentiment on r/fednews – a Reddit sub for federal employees – in favor of a shutdown. "This is the only leverage the Dems have. If they don’t use it we are all toast"

I did this yesterday; glad to see it getting boosted here.

Thanks for this post: I just called all three offices of both of my senators (MA). I haven't reached anything other than voicemail since this administration started, but on the plus side, that makes it a lot faster to make that many calls, I guess.

eta: I didn't use a script, but basically said something to the effect that this is currently the only way we have a chance to stop whatever the hell this chaos is that's happening, which is certainly not actual politics.

I find this type of calling awkward, but then I figure if I get voicemail, really what they need for their tallies is enough of the requested info to ensure I'm a constituent, the issue I'm calling about, and my opinion of it; I'm very bad at including anecdotes/reasons, so often skip that part.

The script I wrote:
Hi, my name is [] and I am a constituent from []. My phone number is [] and my zip code is []. I am calling to urge the senator to oppose the continuing resolution on the budget. If the Republicans want to allow Elon Musk to hold the power of the purse, the Democrats must allow the government to shut down. Thank you for your time.

You are much more coherent than I!

I've gotten a lot faster in saying first name, last name, spelled out name (which I often do anyway because people tend to misspell both my names), then either "calling from Municipality, State, ZIP" or email (same as name at gmail), phone number super quick, ditto mailing address (but I skip the apartment number). It's a lot.

(And I doubt anyone has the time to go verify each caller is a constituent anyway. Which makes me wonder what would happen if I called, say, my Floridian aunt's senators, using her address/ZIP.....)

Thanks for this comment. I made my very first phone call to a rep today, not about a shutdown though (it was about Medicaid which is personally important to me!) and while I was careful to leave my name and number and say I was a constituent, it didn't occur to me to include zip code or address. Next time I call, I'll include zip code at least.

I think it really varies by Congresscritter. One of my senator's voicemail messages requests all this info, while the other requests the spelling of first and last, plus ZIP, with everything else optional (to get on mailing lists).

Thanks for sharing! I left a message for Senator Padilla using most of this script.
